Herbert Hoover and Hoovervilles
- Elected as president at the beginning of the stock market crash
- High unemployment rate
- Bank failures/closures
- High tariffs on international goods designed to protect American economy (doesn't work)
- Free enterprise: government stayed out of business, no bail outs, based on capitalism, wasn't going to work
- Introduces socialist measures to help out the people from being destitute, the dole (employment insurance/welfare),
- People were unhappy
- Hoovervilles (towns built by homeless people) spring up
- Replaced by F. D. Roosevelt in 1932 election
